Vopak building storage for Shell biorefinery.
[TankStorageMag] Vopak and Shell have begun a long-term co-operation deal under which Vopak will store and supply feedstocks for Shell’s biorefinery in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, from its Vlaardingen terminal.Shell’s 820,000 tpa biorefinery at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam will produce fuels such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel from waste like used cooking oil, waste animal fat and other industrial and agricultural residual products.
The waste will be supplemented with sustainable vegetable oil. All produced carbon will be captured for permanent storage via the Porthos CCS project.
The Shell refinery will be one of Europe’s largest SAF-production facilities, and Vopak’s feedstock operation will also be one of the largest of its kind in the biofuels industry. Vopak is building 16 new tanks at its Vlaardingen site with a total capacity of 64,000 m3.
A number of old tanks have been demolished to make space for the new tanks. Other existing infrastructure will be modified to handle waste-based feedstocks. Vopak says that the terminal has extensive experience in storing such products, and is well-connected for vessels, barges, trucks and trains.
Patrick van der Voort, vopak’s division president Europe & Africa.
This project fits well within Vopak’s ambition to support our customers and society by developing and investing in infrastructure solutions for facilitating more sustainable energies and feedstocks.
“We are looking forward to continuing to invest in the Port of Rotterdam.”
