Tepsa Tarragona getting ready to import animal by-products to produce biofuels.

The company specialized in liquid bulk Tepsa has obtained authorization from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to import animal by-products for the production of biofuels through its terminal in Tarragona. It is the second Spanish port area to receive this training, behind the port of Huelva, which obtained the permit in November 2020, and the first on the Mediterranean coast.

From this moment on, the Tepsa terminal in Tarragona will be able to receive these liquid goods in bulk with non-EU origin through the Center d’Inspecció Dependent of the Border Control Point. Until now, merchandise of this type was disembarked at the Tepsa terminal through a series of bureaucratic procedures that can already be resolved at the port itself,as explained by the port authority.

To obtain this authorization, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries requests compliance with a series of requirements, such as having adequate infrastructure for the storage, inspection and assured traceability of the merchandise.

Likewise, the institution has the obligation to carry out specific procedures that guarantee the integrity of the merchandise, without altering its properties. The permit that the Tepsa terminal has received certifies that its facilities, as well as the inspection procedure, are adequate for the importation of these products.

The biofuel traffic of the port of Tarragona is experiencing a growing demand, they have recalled from the port authority. During the first eight months of 2021, the Catalan enclave increased its demand by 9.8% compared to the same period in 2020.

Last year, the port managed to move 145,839 tons of biofuel, a figure that has not yet reached the record of 187,630 tons moved in 2018.
