OMV: You’re SAF with us – Sustainable Aviation Fuel certificates for sustainable business air travel
In a globally connected world, the movement of people, products and materials across distances near and far is vital. And currently, aviation remains a key method of making these journeys.
Most company-related aviation emissions fall under what is known as Scope 3 emissions. These are the indirect emissions not directly associated with company activities but rather partners and other entities along the value chain.
It’s a complex web of emissions that’s difficult to untangle. In fact, Scope 3 emissions represent the biggest part of the carbon footprint of many global corporations. For Microsoft, they account for more than 96% of the company’s total.
That’s why, in November 2023, Microsoft and OMV signed the first of three agreements to accelerate sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) market development. SAF produces 80% less CO2 emissions over its lifecycle compared to conventional kerosene-based jet fuel. Microsoft can reduce its Scope 3 emissions from supply chain logistics and business air travel by use of credible, high-quality SAF certificates, showing it is a viable and credible way for other companies to do the same.
