Isidre Esteve and Repsol carry out the first test with renewable fuel in the Toyota Hilux during the Rally of Morocco.

Repsol took advantage of the Morocco Rally 2021 to test a new renewable fuel in the Toyota Hilux Overdrive of Isidre Esteve and Txema Villalobos. This compound uses 50% biofuel to reduce the carbon footprint while maintaining optimal performance. The Repsol Rally Team has seen this first-hand at the start of the competition, where it is fighting for the top 10 in its category (T1).

The Rally of Morocco is one of the most anticipated events of the raid season as it is the prelude to the great event of the season, the Dakar Rally 2022. The conditions of this race, both in terms of terrain and navigation, the They make it a perfect test to be able to put to the test all the mechanical innovations that the Repsol Rally Team incorporates this season to achieve a good result.

In the case of Repsol, the Rally of Morocco has become a fundamental milestone in the development of its competition program, since both in the ‘shakedown’ prior to the rally, in the prologue and in the first stage, Isidre Esteve has been able to test for the first time a renewable fuel created specifically for its Toyota Hilux from the Repsol Technology Lab , a leading research center that has 240 scientists and researchers , from where the fuel for this initiative has been supplied and where the tests have been carried out necessary to ensure that it meets all quality requirements.

It is a fuel with a low carbon footprint in whose formulation 50% biofuel has been used, a significant amount and with which Repsol, Toyota and Isidre Esteve himself seek to achieve that the performance of the car, both at the power level as dynamic behavior, have optimal performance while presenting as a more sustainable solution.

In the three days of testing, Isidre Esteve and his co-driver Txema Villalobos have completed a total of 500 kilometers , a valuable distance with which Repsol technicians, in collaboration with the Overdrive Toyota team, have analyzed all the telemetry data of the Isidre’s car, as well as knowing the feelings of the Catalan driver and drawing conclusions about the operation of this new biofuel.

Isidre Esteve.

I am very happy with the result. We have analyzed it with the Toyota engineers and the performance is very good, so we will continue working to see if we can use it in the next competitions.

Through innovation and technology, Repsol always seeks to achieve excellence in the sports competitions in which it participates, with the aim of using all the lessons learned in the races – the best test bench – to later incorporate them into the products and services that it makes available to its customers.

In terms of renewable fuels, Repsol continues to work so that solutions such as those that have been tested in the Rally of Morocco can also be incorporated into other competitions in which the Spanish multi-energy company is present.

In 2019 Repsol became the first company in its sector in the world to commit to being carbon neutral by 2050, which was a catalyst for other companies that have subsequently faced similar challenges.

Repsol’s Strategic Plan 2021-2025 establishes as main axes to achieve this objective the improvement of energy efficiency, the promotion of the circular economy (in which biofuels and synthetic fuels have a place), the production of hydrogen free of emissions and increasing the renewable generation of electricity and the use, capture and storage of CO2.

Repsol will build the first advanced low-emission biofuels plant in Spain at its Cartagena refinery, using recycled raw materials. The company has also announced the installation in the port of Bilbao of one of the largest centers producing synthetic zero net emissions fuels in the world from renewable hydrogen generated with also 100% renewable energy.

Highlight:

  • It is a fuel with a low carbon footprint in whose formulation 50% biofuel has been used. The Repsol Rally Team has been able to see its performance first-hand in the first days of the prestigious event.
