HVO biofuel to be used for towing in British Columbia port.

According to Ocean Group, this fuel, derived from renewable sources like vegetable oils and animal residues, reduces CO2 emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional fossil fuels. After successful tests in 2023 and gaining approval from Transport Canada, Ocean Group plans to fully transition its tugboats to HVO by the end of 2024.

As explained, this move is part of a broader sustainability initiative, which also includes a partnership with Musqueam Capital Corp. So far, eight community members have undergone maritime training, with three now employed on Ocean Group’s tugs.

Eventually, the plan is for all Ocean Group tugs in British-Columbia to be powered by this energy source, in order to reduce their emissions.
