Fratelli Cosulich claims italian vlsfo biofuel bunkering first.
Fratelli Cosulich says it has become the first marine fuel supplier to deliver bio very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) to a container vessel in Italy.
The bunkering, which took place in Genoa in February, was done in collaboration with Genoa-based barge company Ottavio Novella and involved a Hapag-Lloyd container vessel, Fratelli Colsulich said in a release issued on social media.
Fratelli Cosulich noted that shipping’s inclusion in the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) is expected to result in an increase in marine biofuel demand. Accordingly, the company, in partnership with IPOLM, a local refinery situated close to the Port of Genoa, has begun producing and supplying its own bio VLSFO.
‘The container vessel burnt with no issue the fuel, which is made up of 10% bio component sourced from an Italian biorefinery ISCC certified,’ Fratelli Cosulich said.
‘The biofuel will enable vessel owners and charterers to reduce GHG emissions by 10% and lower the cost of ETS coverage.’
As previously reported, Fratelli Cosulich is set to take delivery of two LNG bunkering vessels in September and January 2024 respectively. The company has also received approval in principle from Italian class society RINA for the design of a 21,000 cbm ammonia bunker tanker.
