Another giant step on our quest to decarbonise Energy-from-Waste! We have achieved an industry first by trialling the use of hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) as a replacement for diesel to cut fossil fuel CO2 emissions in our day-to-day operations.
Following a pioneering 12-month research programme, we are now using HVO at our Newhurst Energy Recovery Facility in Leicestershire.
HVO – made from waste vegetable oil – is now fuelling our auxiliary burners, plant vehicles and back-up generator.
Once long-term performance testing is completed, we plan to roll out the use of HVO across our full fleet of EfW facilities.
Principal Engineer Shaun Tolley CEng MIMechE led the R&D programme in collaboration with the Germany-based manufacturer of the plant’s burners, SAACKE GmbH.
The programme involved chemical analysis and extensive lab testing at Saacke’s headquarters in Bremen, Germany, before operational trials commenced at Newhurst ERF.
Data from the trial showed that the use of HVO enabled both environmental and process benefits, including enhanced combustion efficiency, cleaner burning performance, finer atomisation rates and elimination of soot.
