Argent Energy to supply waste-based biofuel to Virgin Voyages new cruise liners.

Argent Energy, a leading European manufacturer of waste-based biofuels in the UK and the Netherlands, is becoming a sustainable marine fuel supplier for Virgin Voyages.

With this partnership, the company wants to help boost decarbonisation of the marine sector by helping Virgin Voyages achieve significant greenhouse gas savings, using their second-generation biodiesel as a sustainable solution.

Argent Energy produces biodiesel made from waste organic fats and oils, with plants in England, Scotland and Amsterdam. Their vision to ‘Reduce the World’s Carbon Footprint’, will now have more global reach as their clean renewable fuel expands to cruise port locations and displaces fossil fuels.

A SUSTAINABLE MARINE FUEL

Biodiesel is one of the most cost-effective means of decarbonising marine transport offering immediate solutions for businesses wanting to decarbonise. Argent’s production process includes full distillation of the basic biodiesel allowing them to utilise highly degraded waste streams as raw materials and still produce a very pure fuel that exceeds marine grade specifications.

Argent’s biodiesel, which delivers around 90% reduction in CO2 emissions, can be blended into marine fuel to be a drop-in replacement for straight fossil fuel.

Made solely from sustainable resources, Virgin Voyages biodiesel from Argent will use only feedstocks certified as wastes under Annex IX of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) scheme and undergo third party review to align with Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) standards.

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE

Argent Energy is part of Swire, a global group with over 150 years’ experience in the marine industry.
Argent’s strong technical expertise coupled with their operational ability to manage the logistics and sustainability of the process make way for a seamless, sustainable fuel transition.

THE PARTNERSHIP

As the industry looks towards the viability and application of a range of Sustainable Marine Fuels, the economic benefits and decarbonising strength of biodiesel makes it a crucially important transition tool over the next 15 to 20 years in the fight against climate change.

Virgin Voyages, Argent Energy is helping towards their Net Zero ambitions said:

In order to significantly reduce our carbon footprint further, we must transition to lower-carbon fuel sources as soon as possible.

“We could do this with our existing engines if more sustainable ‘drop-in’ fuels were available in our ports of call. Unfortunately, these fuels are not yet widely available, and in most cases, are not cost competitive. We want to work with partners to pioneer for the essential change,” said Tom McAlpin, CEO of Virgin Voyages.”

Erik Rietkerk, CEO of Argent Energy said

Decarbonisation of the marine sector is an oceanic task and Virgin Voyages’ decision to use Argent Energy as a supplier of sustainable marine fuels demonstrates the importance of waste-based biodiesel as a key strategy in that task.
