The US Department of Energy announces $16,7 million in project selections to advance production of affordable biofuels and biochemicals.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) announced $16.7 million in funding for five projects to advance the production of affordable biofuels and biochemicals that will significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The selected projects will support the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Grand Challenge, and its target of net-zero emissions by 2050, through developing the sustainable feedstock and conversion technologies needed to produce vital fuels and carbon-based products that are challenging to decarbonize.
DOE is committed to an equitable, clean energy future and these projects support DOE’s Clean Fuels & Products Shot™ goals of generating 50% of carbon-based chemicals from sustainable carbon resources, and the Executive Order on Advancing Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Innovation for a Sustainable, Safe, and Secure American Bioeconomy to address the climate crisis by driving innovation in American renewable energy and chemicals manufacturing.
Decarbonizing the industrial sector is also critical to equity goals. Located in four states, these selected projects support DOE’s long-term objectives of advancing high-impact technologies that will create well-paying jobs, support underserved economies, and accelerate the growth of the U.S. bioeconomy.
The selected projects will address the crucial advancement of biomanufacturing R&D through two topic areas:
- Overcoming barriers to syngas conversion, with the goal to advance syngas cleanup technologies to identify and overcome barriers for the conversion of biomass and waste-derived syngas to SAF, renewable diesel and marine fuels, and
- Overcoming barriers to biochemical products, with the goal to develop biochemical conversion technologies to produce renewable, affordable chemicals with strong GHG reduction potential.
